World's largest charitable foundation has $500m headquarters
Pankaj | Nov 17 2009

The generous Gates Foundation, which is the world’s largest charitable foundation, is in middle of building a 900,000-square-foot headquarters near the Seattle Center. The $500m complex is a massive project with two six-story, boomerang-shaped buildings on 12 acres for nearly 800 employees. In the heart of the campus is an atrium six stories high that is completely open and enclosed by glass windows. It is also expected to get bigger in the coming years with more than 1,000 staffers and further contributions from the Gates and Warren Buffett. The headquarters-in-the-making is also aiming for a Gold rating in LEED Certification, (an environmental building standard), which includes a living roof on the parking garage and a million-gallon rainwater storage tank to reduce water use. This isn’t just a construction but a meaningful one but then you have to be one of the world’s richest men to add meaning to even buildings.
